| Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Proposed Biosphere |
Plans are now well underway to create a new style UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Galloway and Southern Ayrshire. New zones surrounding areas already recognised for their special wildlife interest at Cairnsmore of Fleet and Silver Flowe/Merrick Kells will promote management and development which will make wise and sustainable use of our natural resources.
Following extensive consultation and support from stakeholders, local communities, and public agencies it was agreed that an application for a new style and enlarged Biosphere Reserve be submitted to UNESCO. If the proposal is approved by UNESCO, hopefully in 2012, the area will have an international accolade which demonstrates how nature conservation and sustainable development go hand in hand. By making the most of and celebrating our surroundings we can improve our quality of life and the experiences for our visitors.
The worldwide recognition a Biosphere Reserve gives a place provides opportunities to promote and demonstrate a balanced relationship between people and nature and as part of a global Biosphere network, to share experience and learn from good practice.
